A quick year-end review for your will and your business
Hi there,
The end of the year is a natural time to take stock. You don’t need to redo everything. Most of the time, a short review is enough to confirm that your plans still match your life.
Here is the checklist we suggest to clients each December:
| • |
Your will or trust. Read it once with fresh eyes. A marriage, a divorce, a new child or grandchild, or a move to another state are all good reasons to ask whether it still says what you want. |
| • |
Your beneficiary designations. Retirement accounts and life insurance usually go to the people named on the account, not through your will. Make sure those forms are current. |
| • |
Powers of attorney and health care directives. Check who you’ve named to act for you, and that they are still willing and able to do it. |
| • |
For business owners. Confirm when your state annual report is due, bring your company records up to date, and look over any contracts that renew automatically. |
If anything on this list raises a question, call us or reply to this email. A short conversation is often all it takes to know whether something needs updating.
This newsletter is general information, not legal advice. Every situation is different, so please talk with an attorney about yours.

Tip of the month
Make your papers easy to find
Keep your original will, insurance policies and a list of your accounts together in one safe place, and tell someone you trust where it is. A good plan only helps if the people you love can find it.
